What is the Difference between Prediabetes and Diabetes?

The main difference between prediabetes and diabetes is  your blood sugar levels. These levels are above average but not quite high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.  The easiest way to check blood sugar is to use a blood glucose monitor. You simply apply a drop of blood onto a test strip and the monitor tells you the result. You can also ask your doctor to check your A1C and fasting blood sugar with your next doctor visit.  The A1C is a blood test that gives you the average of what your blood sugars have been in the last 3 months. If your A1C is below 5.7% it is considered normal.  If is is between 5.7 and 6.4% on two different occasions, you are considered prediabetic and if over 6.4% A1C you are considered a diabetic.  There are some cases that the A1C may be inaccurate.  For example if a person is a chronic bleeder your A1C may be falsely low.  If you have iron-deficiency anemia your results may be falsely high.To be diagnosed with prediabetes your fasting blood sugar would be between 100-125mg/dL . To be diagnosed with diabetes these results would be over 126 for the fasting blood sugar and the A1C over 6.5%.

Most people who have type 2 diabetes almost always have started with prediabetes.  Because there are no clear symptoms of prediabetes many people do not know they have it.  You may be the 1 in 3 people who have this disease.  Some people with prediabetes have symptoms of diabetes.  The most common symptoms of diabetes are; urinating often, feeling very thirsty, feeling very hungry, extreme fatigue, and blurred vision.  Prediabetes put you at a much higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Preventing the escalation to type 2 diabetes is possible.  Research shows that by decreasing your weight by 7%, exercising 30 minutes a day, eating whole, unprocessed foods, and decreasing your sugar intake can reverse your prediabetes.

It is never too late to take control of your life and start living a healthy happy life.
