Your Prescription for Health and Wellness

After 40 we all start feeling the effects of aging.  Have you gone to bed feeling fine, and wake up the next morning feeling as though you have been beat up?  It is so crazy how our body just does not act as it once did.  My husband Joel, who always cracks me up use to ask me if I could stop beating him up at night!  LOL!  Of course aging is a natural process and we all must go through it, however there are many ways to slow down that process.

The aging process is accelerated by sugar, stress and toxicity.  My prescription for health and wellness consists of better nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes.

The most important lifestyle changes for health and wellness is exercise, sleep and meditation.

Exercise will not only slow the aging process, it will  help you lose weight, feel better, increase energy levels, increase muscle mass and decrease your chance of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Sleep is so important for good memory and cognitive skills, it also decreases aging of the skin. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep in a cool dark room and have a soothing bedtime routine.

Meditation has been shown to decrease the signs of aging due to decrease in stress.  There are many different types of meditation including mindfulness, prayer, TM, and many others.  Find what works best for you.

Avoid these 5 Foods that accelerate aging

Refined sugar is the biggest culprit in aging.  Sugar creates inflammation in the body and creates wrinkles.  So avoid processed sugar!  Especially sodas, and fructose.  Avoiding sugar will also decrease your chances of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.  Definitely a win-win solution.

Grains will also speed up inflammation and increase aging.  I know this is especially tough on bread lovers like I was once.  I believe that once you cut this out you will find yourself with an abundance of energy!

Artificial sugar and artificial ingredients also speed up aging by increasing toxicity.  Did you know that artificial sugar is 15 times sweeter than sugar?  It is no wonder that people who consume artificial sugar have an even higher craving for sugar.  These artificial ingredients also play a role with hormone dysfunction causing our hormones to get out of whack and cause an increase in abdominal fat.

Transfat and hydrogenated oils also causes inflammation and increases aging.  Make sure to read labels and avoid these ingredients.

Alcohol also causes inflammation and can increase signs of aging.  This is probably the most difficult one to avoid.  An occasional glass of red wine would be beneficial for it’s anti-oxidant effects, however too much and any hard liquor is detrimental.

Top 5 Foods for Anti-Aging

Green-Leafy vegetables are powerful antioxidants that not only slow the aging process, they decrease your chances of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Wild-caught fish are an excellent source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory that decrease signs of aging.

Berries especially blueberries are rich in anthocyanins which are amazing antioxidants that not only decrease the aging process, they prevent brain aging, and decrease your chances of alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Antioxidant Teas and herbs like Turmeric and garlic are super antioxidants that also slow the aging process.

Make sure to talk to your doctor before starting a new nutrition and exercise program.  These suggestions should decrease your aging process and you will feel better, look better and look younger!
